If you are taking the traditional option and trench burying your polythene around the perimitre of your tunnel, your trench will need to be approximately a spade's width by a spade's depth.  About 12" wide by 12" deep.  On this basis, it is a good idea to allow for 2' of space around your tunnel, on your plot.

If you decide to batten your polythene to a base rail, you won't need as much space around the tunnel but remember that you need practical working space when putting your tunnel up.
